Privacy Policy
The short version. Chess Diorama has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no trackers. Playing against the computer or passing the phone back and forth sends nothing anywhere. The only thing that ever leaves your device is the display name you type when you play someone online, along with the moves of that game.
What is collected
Only when you play an online multiplayer game:
- The display name you choose. You type it yourself when creating or joining a game. It does not have to be your real name, and nothing checks that it is.
- The game itself — the moves played, whose turn it is, which colour each player has, and whether the game is waiting, active or finished.
That is the complete list. There is no sign-up, no email address, no password, no profile.
What is never collected
- No analytics or usage tracking of any kind
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers
- No location data
- No contacts, photos, camera, microphone or files
- No device identifiers or fingerprinting
- No third-party SDKs — the app contains none
The app requests a single Android permission, INTERNET, which is
what online play needs. You can verify this on the Play listing under
Permissions.
Playing offline
Games against the computer and pass-and-play games run entirely on your device. The chess engine is bundled inside the app rather than called over the network, so these modes work in aeroplane mode and transmit nothing at all.
Where the data goes
Online games are served by Cloudflare Workers, and game records are held in Cloudflare Durable Object storage. All traffic between the app and the server is encrypted in transit (HTTPS and WSS).
As the infrastructure provider, Cloudflare processes connection information such as IP addresses in the course of delivering that traffic — the same as for any website you visit. This is not collected or retained by Chess Diorama itself.
Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with any third party for advertising, marketing or any other purpose.
Stored on your device
The app keeps a few preferences locally so it can remember them between sessions: your display name, the piece and board theme, whether sound is on, and a short-lived marker so it can offer to rejoin a game you were in the middle of. These stay on the device. Uninstalling the app removes them.
Keeping and deleting data
Game records, including the display names attached to them, currently remain in storage after a game finishes. There is at present no in-app control for deleting them.
If you want a display name or a game record removed, email the address below and it will be deleted. Because there are no accounts, please include enough detail to identify the game — the display name used and roughly when you played.
Children
Chess Diorama is suitable for all ages and is not directed at children in particular. It has no chat, no user-generated content beyond a chosen display name, no purchases and no ads. Nothing beyond what is described above is collected from anyone, regardless of age.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts doing something this page does not describe, this page will be updated before that change ships, and the effective date at the top will change with it.
